Blending the Registers: How does it work?

Its the most important part of building a voice. Let’s face it. Most singers never get it quite down UNLESS they are learning the right information and applying it the correct way. And, there is a correct way, and its not by trial and error. 

Building a seamless blend between the registers (chest/basic to headvoice/falsetto) requires the perfect, graduating, progressive, diligent, and well-timed application of muscle strengthening and coordination along with resonance adjustments that couple perfectly with the laryngeal adjustments. 

Ok, lets break it down. You have two registers (chest/basic and headvoice/falsetto). 

FIRST, they must be in their right spots (used in the correct range of notes on a scale) not pulling chest too high (even a note or two!) or sinking falsetto down too low. 

NEXT, the registers need strengthened. Through triggering exercises, both registrations need to be of equal strength and endurance, minding the breaking point - if we insist on calling it that.

THIRD, amalgamation of the registers. There is no bridge, or passaggio if one navigates the combining of the registers correctly. This is done first with the functional listening of what muscle systems need to be brought into gradation and keenly developed in the area of lower headvoice/falsetto. 

How does one do this? A good vocal pedagogue knows the procedure and the procedure can not happen without the trained functional listening! Does the teacher hear what the muscle systems are doing or not doing in that low headvoice area? And then, do they know how to trigger the muscular response and resonance adjustment (its NOT one OR the other), in order to begin the building of the blend? The triggering vocalises must incorporate more arytenoid activity IN PERCENTAGES according to pitch.  It is a muscular response we are invoking, not just a resonance adjustment. The resonance needs to be adjusted for each pitch according to each vowel - yep, that’s hundreds of combinations within an average vocal range! The coupling system is of paramount importance, and works in our favor IF we know how to have one end influence the other and can toggle between the pendulum constantly, working with the voice’s information it is giving us, what it NEEDS.

So, we must learn to listen functionally, abide by the process (There are no special tricks! Put down your straws, people!!!), and work with the correct developmental process with diligence and patience. If done correctly, it does not matter the voice type, progress will be made (as long as a student is practicing!) with undoubtable accuracy and predictability. 

Don’t settle for anything less! You, too, can have a perfect blend of the registers (or teach it) along with consistent power, expression, and enjoyment in singing.
